Scintillometer

Scintillometer (SC)

The SC is a dual purpose gamma radiation monitor that measures the external gamma count rate (c/s) and the external gamma dose rate (µSv/h). Whilst the SC is typically used by a geologist to assess a gamma count rate 'signature' of a radioactive mineralization it can be useful that the geologist is aware of the external gamma dose rate.

The SC uses the Φ1"x 1" NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal coupled with a low noise photomultiplier tube (PMT). The high voltage power supply/preamplifier/amplifier board pre-amplifies and amplifies gamma pulses that are counted and processed by the microcontroller board coupled with the two line LCD.

The gamma count rate (c/s) is displayed either every second or every tenth second

A buzzer can be engaged or disengaged by a small panel switch situated behind the bracket situated under the belt clip.

The displayed external gamma dose rate (µSv/h) is calculated by multiplying the count rate by the calibration constants P1=P2 (P1=P2=0.00436 approx.). The calibration constant was established through the calibration of the RDS Scintillometer in a gamma radiation field of the 137Cs calibration rig of the SA EPA's Radiation Protection Division.
