Charcoal Canister

Charcoal Canister (CC)

The RDS Charcoal Canister (CC) is an aluminium cup with a precision manufactured lid with an 'O'-ring. Activated coconut charcoal that is under a metal mesh inside the cup absorbs radon gas. If the CC is pushed into topsoil for a known period of time (typically 2 – 3 days) activated charcoal absorbs the total radon activity that diffused into the cup from soil. The total radon activity in the cup is measured by the gamma spectroscopy method through the gamma counting of radon decay products. The surface radon flux from soil is calculated by considering the exposure time, the lapse time between the end of exposure and counting and the counting time, the cup opening surface area and the measured radon activity in the cup.
